Keep your dog's gastritis at bay

If your dog has been diagnosed by your veterinarian for gastritis, gastroduodenitis or gastric ulcers this post is for you. While your dog is under a veterinarian's treatment for these conditions here are a few home tips to consider

Dietery tips

1. An early breakfast
An early morning breakfast around 6 am or 7 am works wonders. The meal should not be of anything wheat. Try a heavy meal in liquid form or semi solid form
To my dog who had gastric ulcers for sometime what worked best was a meal that contained of blended rice and milk/oats/cereals

2. A late dinner
Many dog owners do not either give their dog the dinner (to keep the dog awake at night for guarding purposes) or give an early dinner around 5pm and then breakfast around 10 am. Would you ever survive if you were on the same routine? C'mon folks, give your dog a late dinner! It will minimize gastric burns

3. Regular meals at specific times of the day
Busy schedules at homes affect the dog, I know. The dog stomach doesn't care about your busyness, your highness. It wants FOOD. GLORIOUS FOOD! Wherever you go or whatever you do, stick to particular times to give your dog all THREE MEALS per day

4. Less spicy, less oily meals
We Asians love spices but it shouldn't be the case with a dog with gastritis, gastroduodenitis and/or gastric ulcers. The meals should be cooked plain woth less or no spices at all.

5. Avoid wheat flour and yeast containing products
Breads, buns and other food made of wheat flour and yeast should be avoided at all times as these are bound to fermentation ultimately leading to bloat and gastric inflammation

6. Trial. Trial. Trial
The process of recovery for patients with gastritis, gastroduodenitis and gastric ulcers is always an individualised one. The food that work on one dog will not work on another at times. For example dairy products; beneficial to some patients and not to some others

7. Fresh clean food and water
Science research has found out that certain bacteria is the cause of gastric burns. Always give fresh food that have been prepared under good hygiene. Provide clean drinking water too. In this case, veterinary probiotics will help reduce harmful bacteria accumulation in the digestive tract

Psychological

1. Avoid separation anxiety
Leaving a dog all alone won't be a good idea if he's the kind of dog who seeks attention all the time. Once you leave the house, it will be a stressful moment to your dog and as you know, stress leads to gastric burning. Consider ways and means to avoid separation anxiety in your dog such as keeping a dog sitter with the dog, doggie day care centres, soft music for your dog and toys to keep your dog occupied

2. Take your dog out for walks, exercise and for some play sessions
Changing your dogs environment for a while will help your dog feel more energised and stress free which will let him eat better

What took me to the UN

I was invited to the United Nations' International Labour Organization for a consultative meeting with the stakeholders of the entrepreneurial system to conduct a start-up ecosystem mapping for the first time in Sri Lanka on the 17th of January 2025 This is my first time to even go to the United Nations and I'm grateful that I was invited. In my invitation it mentioned that I was invited for the potential that I showcased as a young entrepreneur  There were only four young entrepreneurs who were invited while the rest was about 50 other massive stakeholders and entrepreneurs themselves But, what exactly made me to the UN? I was pondering about the "potential" and yes, I think I figured out  1. social impact : aligns with 10 SDGs of UN From healing pets to creating industries, employment and promoting innovation, my work expands in the most sustainable ways 2. health impact : promotes longevity and sustainability of pets directly and human beings indirectl...

Leptospirosis as a zoonosis

Leptospirosis awareness A timely topic as there's a Leptospirosis outbreak in the Northern province of Sri Lanka. I see a gap in the level of awareness on prevention and transmission regarding this topic although there are plenty of sources to explain the symptoms of the disease. It's vital to raise awareness on prevention of spread of the disease among the non-infected at a same level as of the attempts to cure the already infected individuas! Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease - a disease that is transmitted to humans via animals Leptospirosis, also known as "මී උණ" in Sinhala is a highly contagious disease caused by the bacteria Leptospira The carrier of the disease is rodents such as rats, mice and even squirrels The carriers can transmit Leptospira bacteria to most of the mammals such as humans, dogs, cats, cattle, horses, wild animals and marine mammals How does the bacteria enter into an individual? There are several ways by which the bacter...
