Goodbyes to the Negative Nancies

It's the 31st of January 2022 and where has my motivation gone? I thought to myself It's the last day of the month, the number of covid patients are increasing, the country's economy is going down and I lately felt like I have no tomorrow. Thinking in this way hasn't changed my gains, I realised The new seduction is "Positivity" Being positive all the time doesn't make sense, I know but atleast you could get your things done more peacefully at heart and mind. Positivity brings a sense of peace within one's self It's a new month from tomorrow. You always have time to begin. Think of what you must have focused on but you couldn't. Write them down in a diary. Number them according to your priority. Schedule times. Work them out! Never procrastinate! Think of the skills that you want to improve on. Write them down. Work them out! Think of the self care that you missed. Write them down. Work them out! Think of what you missed on your pet ....

Struggles of a dog-mom

Image 1: my dog avoiding a photo as always Every person has his or her own struggles and the dog-mom community has some added very own "battles." Photo bomber My smart dog doesn't let me take a sinlge photo with him! Not even one! All does is photo bombing. This was my most recent struggle and what crossed my mind that I had to write about The Diva My dog has to be dragged every morning for breakfast! Before having his morning meal he's the grumpiest. We have been feeding him on most mornings for many years. He doesn't eat on his own in the morning and expects us to feed him. Just when his tummy is full, he's the cutest in the family running around in the house  At the vet This doesn't apply to me and my dog anymore as my dog gets all of the vet treatment at home without any vet bill. Leaving this aside, long before I started practicing I remember taking my dog to the veterinarian atleast once a month. Finding a tuk to take him, sparing time of...

Peace of mind

How have you been? I have been doing pretty good, I said Why "pretty"? Well, there were days when I wanted to cry, days when I wanted to laugh out loud and also days when I felt like I wasn't part of the world Today I felt like I was nonexistent. Chaos in my mind that I had to pretend that I was fine and I'm sure you have also had plenty of days as such. During monents like these I practice some activities to regain my peace of mind  Activities that help me cope up - slow and conscious breathing   My most favourite activity to help relieve myself of anything and everything is slow conscious breathing. I believe in living a life in the middle path (I'm not deeply into any religion). When feeling sad, I breathe slow and even when I'm overly happy still I breathe slow to make sure that I'm in the middle path and that I'm grounded. To those who wonder what the middle path is, it is to live a life where you're not extremely sad nor extreme...

Keep your dog's gastritis at bay

If your dog has been diagnosed by your veterinarian for gastritis, gastroduodenitis or gastric ulcers this post is for you. While your dog is under a veterinarian's treatment for these conditions here are a few home tips to consider Dietery tips 1. An early breakfast An early morning breakfast around 6 am or 7 am works wonders. The meal should not be of anything wheat. Try a heavy meal in liquid form or semi solid form To my dog who had gastric ulcers for sometime what worked best was a meal that contained of blended rice and milk/oats/cereals  2. A late dinner Many dog owners do not either give their dog the dinner (to keep the dog awake at night for guarding purposes) or give an early dinner around 5pm and then breakfast around 10 am. Would you ever survive if you were on the same routine? C'mon folks, give your dog a late dinner! It will minimize gastric burns 3. Regular meals at specific times of the day Busy schedules at homes affect the dog, I know. Th...

Wandering around wonders

Yesterday I gathered myself up to take a break from my zombie world to move out to spend some quality time with nature; greenery is what I mean because I spend more of my life with pets. The only place I could think of at that time as nature was my home garden We have a small but beautiful 😋 garden and the credit goes to both of my parents for keeping it nice and tidy. Not many flowering plants that we have and most of them are non flowering plants I came across some beautiful flowers and the zombie in me thought that I should share some pictures of the flowers with you Image 1: Daisy flower Image 2: Daisy flower Image 3: Tabernaemontana divaricata  Image 4: purple Orchid Image 5:  Kandyan Dancer Orchid "And I think to myself What a wonderful world" Share images of your garden with me in the comments below, I'd love to see

Grateful

Image 0: unsplash.com Lately I was back to my not-so-motivated mood until I woke up and realised that it was never in my new year resolutions list to feel this way. Sat up on bed, got my diary re wrote my priorities for the day and pushed myself out of the room YouTube has been my trending app ever since the covid lock down hit. Opened up a "Zumba for beginners" video and began moving. I felt like my brain, my hands were not coordinating with my feet at times but it was a great kick! My dog waiting next to me was doing a short stares at me like "whach the heck are ya up to, now?" Didn't care, was gigling and enjoying throughout the Zumba Green cunji (කොළ කැඳ, in Sinhala) is what my mother treated our entire family with, next. Every sip was soothing to the eyes, nose, tongue and to my entire system. I had it with a small piece of Palm jaggery (කිතුල් හකුරු) Image 1: green   cunji by my mother for all four of us  Green cunji recipe: Ingredients  - Shatavar...

Success

Becoming rich? No Becoming a doctor/engineer? Never  Belonging to a particular religion/race? Not at all Success to me is being able to spend more time with one's family and to have an open mindset for personal growth  Spending more time with one's family:  Where else should you put your energy in? A healthy family should be everything. If you're rich in your mind and if your family has your back, you own the world No matter how much money you have or how many riches you own, if you do not support your family you're not successful, my dear friend. Family comes first because they have you're back after all. The word family I refer to in this context is your immediate family; your mother, father, siblings, spouse and your children The present generation is seduced by social media and all they want more of is high life. When you dig deep you will realise that it's all empty down there in their hearts and lives. Many followers over social media but destr...

Taking care of an immobile dog

Coming across many dog patients who turn  immobile or even less mobile due to various reasons makes anyone's heart break. Their life could be miserable. So are the lives of their owners.  This article is dedicated to such pets and their pet owners to know that the dog's quality of life won't be that bad as you think it would  Taking care of immobile dogs is not an easy task. While you follow your veterinarian recommendations consider the following tips as well for your pet's betterment  1. Resting Certain health conditions need resting to recover. If your vet has recommended complete resting, it means 100% rest. Not 99%. Cage or prepare a boundry around your dog where the length is a little more than the dog's length and the breadth of the cage being a little bit more than the dog's height, basically the space being only enough for the dog to sit, sleep and turn around. Until when, is the next question. Until your veterinarian recommends. Certain diseases need l...

Rabbit School: How to train your rabbit?

Rabbits are intelligent animals but are often under-estimated. As a mechanism of survival rabbits are afraid of anything new, so it's important to have your bunny's trust before engaging in training. Training is most effective with one rabbit at a time, although they are usually rared in pairs.  For a new bunny it's important that he builds trust in you. Spend time hanging out with him but be patient. Give him treats whenever possible and when he realizes that you won't cause harm, your rabbit will feel comfortable enough to hang around you. Once your rabbit builds trust in you, you may start training him.  1. Call out your rabbit's name every time you fill up his food supply. With time, he'll soon start appearing as you call. Do this two to three times a day for two to three weeks but always keep your voice calm -rabbits hate sudden and/or loud noises 2. Train to use a litter box: carefully observe where your rabbit usually eliminates. Place a littl...

Who's your cutest patient? The Veterinarian Magazine

Love at first sight it was. Picked up by my mother because of his cute innocent look when he was a little boy of about 3 months, laying down in the car park of a private hospital premises. It's all about "My Dog", my precious old dog who will turn 14 this year. He has been my cutest patient of all time Image 1: the very first photo of Spot back in October 2008 A half of my life in years has been spent with him. Now, you can guess my age 🤣. We grew up together. I was a teenager and my dog "Spot" was a young chap. He grew up faster, obviously. With time as a child I was silently observing his behaviour, his moods, preferences,  how he fell ill and how he was treated. Later in the years I became a veterinarian and started treating my own patients. "Memories bring back memories," they say. A lot of times I have had my dog's psychological and pathological changes behind my mind to treat my patients. I will share some real cases below: ...

How to bathe your dog in the proper way?

Adopting a correct method of bathing your dog is essential to the health of your pet. Incorrect bathing leads to ear infections which may later get complicated into nervous disorders. Unlike in humans, the ear canal the dog is placed at a right angle not allowing the passage of water out of the ear once gone in. This could cause ear infections which later affects the brain and other parts of the nervous system. Consequences of improper bathing: ear infections in the external/ middle/ inner ear that would lead to reduced/ loss of appetite, fever vestibule syndrome scratching of ears The proper way of bathing a dog: Restrain the dog at first. so that you have control of your dog. Insert two big cotton-wool  plugs into the ear (not too in) to close the ear canal. It's better to use a basin and a bowl for bathing rather than a water hose. Using the bowl pour water onto the body of your dog avoiding the head. You may wash the head with your wet hands without...

how I spend my days

It's always one day at a time for me. No big plans. No big dreams. Living an ordinary life as would anyone from a middle class family. "Middle class?" Why this word? It's the daily struggle to earn a better living, while you're already thriving a moderate life Getting back to the topic Starting off my day with a mug of enriched milk I take my to-do diary - the diary in which I write my daily to-dos. I go through the list of things that I'm supposed to do for the day and keep 'em behind my mind. Then I either go for a walk with my mother or I do a little Zumba as a kick off. Stronger me will prepare breakfast for my dog, feed him, put his bed linen under the sun and dress up to go to the clinic - what I own and where I work. In the meantime I call the veterinary laboratory to coordinate the process of sending samples to them everyday. For breakfast I mostly eat rice and sometimes a healthy smoothy with green leaves or fruits and at times something like brea...

Self care practices

The most trending word for the past two years or so I feel is self care. Have we really practiced it? Or do you even know what it is? Are you even on the right track? I wasn't much until the end of 2021 My one and only new year's resolution for 20222 was and still is self focus; self care after all. So far my resolution has been working on in my favour or probably it's the other way around 🤣 and no regrets How you could practice self care: 1. Persistent affirmations: - tell yourself that you're enough - tell yourself that you're focused on what you want out of your life - remind yourself of what you want  - remind yourself to let go of what you have no control over * practice everyday and many times a day 2. Eat healthy and drink more water Vegetables, fruits, meat all in appropriate balance and plenty of clean water 3. Daily exercise or a walk 4. Learn something new - a new recipe, how to play a new song on the guitar, a new skill at work. IMPROVE. IMP...

Who am I

Just another human being on earth, I would say. Dr Romela Salgado by name and I love being called Romela I was born and bred in the beautiful island of Sri Lanka and am enjoying the hidden beauty of the unspoilt life here in Lanka. By profession I'm a small scale entrepreneur running my own veterinary practice  @vet4petanimalclinic  . I'm self employed there as a registered veterinary surgeon During my free time I scroll through the Internet looking for opportunities to improve myself personally and professionally, enjoy music,  bake, play with my dog and what not. I have less than a handful of friends but they're family to me. I have my precious old dog who will turn 14 in a few months. Telling you about my family, there's my mother, father and a younger sister who has my back at all times. The picture below is a very recent photo of myself; a rare moment of a selfie Beliefs: more into spirituality than into any religion. I believe that for anything to work...
