Economic boost or boast?

The pet food industry is booming at a CAGR of 5.9% but what matters the most is what percentage of that 5.9 promotes sustainability and longevity in pets

"Sustainability" - living a healthy life without the need for medication

"Longevity" - living beyond the currently determined average life span of a dog. Sustainability and longevity go hand in hand and depend on 3 main factors:

• genetics

• environment

• nutrition.

Out of these three factors, the one which we can have the most control of is nutrition

Keeping the nutrition factor in mind it's vital that we:

- as pet owners, read, understand and choose genuinely nutritious pet food and supplements

- as veterinarians, take one step forward to learn, understand and recommend genuinely nutritious food and supplements leaving all the marketing noises aside to consider what's suitable for each particular pet

- as Pet food and pet supplement companies, choose to produce genuinely nutritious, safe food and supplements that are not just limited to the product label

- build an UNBIASED parameter to measure the sustainability and longevity of pets in relation to the pet food industry's CAGR

The end goal is to build a population of pets

• with less diseases

• with less need for medication

• who would stay with us for longer

What took me to the UN

I was invited to the United Nations' International Labour Organization for a consultative meeting with the stakeholders of the entrepreneurial system to conduct a start-up ecosystem mapping for the first time in Sri Lanka on the 17th of January 2025 This is my first time to even go to the United Nations and I'm grateful that I was invited.
